Purpose
The purpose of the week is to start the conversation about discovering, preserving, and exploring mixed heritage. While there are spaces for those with specific heritages, there lacks one for those who have more than one. With the nation’s growing multiracial population, there are challenges these individuals may face, such as areas of multiracial incompetence and difficulties fitting into their communities due to their racial identity.
History
The week will celebrate those students and will educate the broader community about issues faced by mixed individuals. While the identity based agencies have increased in collaboration, there are still limited opportunities and current programs for students to celebrate various identities.
